WITH a majority in favour of changes to the road network in Wynnum central to add more street parking, one-way streets are likely to be introduced as the Wynnum Centre Suburban Renewal plan moves forward.

Council released the results of the Wynnum CBD Parking survey this week, with 68 per cent in support of turning Florence and Edith Streets into one-way streets.

The survey received 358 responses.

Those opposed to one-way streets were generally still in favour of providing more parking.

The survey was initiated by Wynnum Manly Councillor Alex Givney in response to concerns raised by traders during her campaign.

“I know Wynnum’s parking situation is a hot topic in our community and the results of our survey show people are open to us making some changes,” Cr Givney said.

“It’s clear Baysiders really care about keeping our community moving, while making this busy area more accessible for everyone.

“I’m looking forward to working with Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner and our team to explore converting Florence St and Edith St to one-way traffic.

“This would make room for angled parking and create more spaces for everyone who wants to explore Wynnum’s CBD.”

Cr Givney said she was also looking into improving existing bus zones and crossings to make it easier to get around the CBD without a car.

“We’ll continue to work with the community every step of the way to make sure any changes support local businesses and make it easier for everyone to enjoy our incredible Bayside,” she said.

Former Wynnum Manly councillor Peter Cumming said the suggestion of angled parking had come up several times during his time as councillor for the Ward, and Council’s traffic engineers were against the idea.

“Angled parking can create traffic hazards. The risks outweigh the benefits,” Mr Cumming said.

“With the number of bus stops in Florence St, I’m not sure how many extra car spaces you’d get, if any.“A lot of the greenery, landscaping and trees in Florence and Edith Streets would have to be removed.

“Do we want bare cement with no greenery. That would make the area hot.
