Jetty closes again but hopes for close finish

WELLINGTON Point Jetty has been closed for urgent maintenance repairs, with hopes they will be completed in time for Christmas.

Since November 4, the pier has been cordoned off due to considerable damage sustained by the wooden sections of the jetty, including the beams and supports.

Stage one of the repairs is expected to last approximately five weeks, depending on weather conditions.

The closure comes soon after the LNP’s $100,000 commitment towards “the preparation of a business case for the improvement” of Wellington Point reserve, including the jetty’s renovation and a safer boat ramp.

Newly-elected LNP Member for Oodgeroo Amanda Stoker said the investment would be a “community-supported refresh” for the reserve.

“The LNP’s $100,000 commitment to the revitalisation of the Wellington Point precinct will fund the business case, costing and planning of the works needed to improve the safety and amenity of the Point,” Ms Stoker said.

“I envisage this will include the restoration of the jetty, a breakwater to make the boat ramp safer, facilities for smaller watercraft and an analysis of the options to improve parking.”

Ms Stoker said she had written to the incoming Minister to acquire a timeline for the commitment, and was seeking its implementation as quickly as possible.

Ms Stoker and Member for Redland Rebecca Young have both recently been assigned to Queensland LNP’s Assistant Ministry, where they will look to represent the region in policy decisions.

Ms Young and Ms Stoker are united in saying they will look to improve the infrastructure and facilities throughout Redland City.
