Redland City Council is backing local efforts to protect the environment by supporting community participation in this year’s Clean Up Australia Day.
The council will again supply free kerbside wheelie bins or skip bins to registered groups hosting clean-up activities across Redlands Coast, provided applications are lodged before the relevant deadlines.
Mayor Jos Mitchell said the national event was a hands-on opportunity for residents to help safeguard the region’s natural assets.
“From our beautiful island beaches to our bushland reserves and open spaces, every natural area of Redlands Coast needs to be protected,” she said.
“Litter is damaging to the environment and puts our wildlife and marine life at risk, particularly when it enters our local waterways.
“Clean Up Australia Day is a great opportunity to do your part in keeping the environment clean and maintaining the natural beauty of our city.”
Mayor Mitchell said residents could take part by joining an existing clean-up listed on the Clean Up Australia Day website or by registering their own group activity.
“As has been the case for several years, council is supporting the event by providing free kerbside wheelie bins or skip bins to registered event organisers who apply before the deadline,” she said.
To be eligible for a council-supplied bin, island clean-up events must be registered by Tuesday, 10 February 2026, while mainland events must be registered by Tuesday, 17 February 2026.
Organisers can request a bin by calling council on 3829 8999 or emailing rcc@redland.qld.gov.au.
Council’s Recycling and Waste portfolio representative Tracey Huges encouraged individuals, schools, businesses and community groups to get involved.
“This is your chance to make a real difference to our naturally wonderful Redlands Coast environment,” Cr Huges said.
“Whether you’re participating individually or joining a group clean-up in your part of the city, every effort across the mainland and islands helps to prevent litter from entering our waterways and harming our wildlife.”
Cr Huges urged participants to prioritise safety during clean-up activities, particularly by avoiding roadsides and other hazardous areas.
“By keeping litter out of the environment, we can ensure Redlands Coast remains a naturally wonderful place for generations to come,” she said.
Clean Up Australia Day activities will be held on:
- Tuesday, 24 February – Business Clean Up Day
- Friday, 27 February – School Clean Up Day
- Sunday, 1 March – Community Clean Up Day
