LOCAL families are rallying for more engaging activities for children following the removal of a beloved water slide from the Cleveland Aquatic Centre.
The Cleveland Aquatic Centre is a cherished destination for many families, hosting countless weekends and birthday parties.
One of the standout attractions that brought joy to visitors was the waterslide.
So, when Cleveland resident Sarah French discovered that the slide had been removed, she took to a local community page to express her disappointment.
“We have been using the Aquatic Centre for over 14 years of living in Cleveland,” Sarah said.
“I have seen my girls grow up from being toddlers to now being teenagers and having many fun days out at the pool in the summer, and lots of fun sliding down the waterslide.”
Following the overwhelming response to her Facebook post, Sarah noted that it was clear the community felt upset and disappointed, with many hoping the removal was only a temporary measure.
A Redland City Council spokesperson said the slide was removed in May after reaching the end of its lifespan and options were being explored.
Sarah also emphasised the lack of activities in the Redlands, pointing out the numerous programs offered by Brisbane, Logan, Moreton Bay, and Gold Coast councils that provide a wide range of activities for all ages.
“I think it is terrible that we pay such high rates in the Redlands and yet we only get a Christmas concert, and limited programs run through the library and Indigiscapes,” she said.
“I feel they should be doing a lot more to keep people active, healthy, happy, engaging in the community, socialising etc.”
Local foster mum Pete suggested that the Redlands should consider opening a large waterpark, given the number of young families in the surrounding suburbs who would use it.
“I would support efforts to improve recreational facilities especially a water park,” she said.
