More than 1,800 households and small businesses across Brisbane’s east have installed home batteries under the Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries program, new data has revealed.
Postcode-level figures show strong uptake across the electorate of Bonner, with 1,824 households and businesses installing battery systems since the program began.
The figures reflect a broader national trend, with outer suburban and regional communities leading the adoption of home battery technology.
Around 77 per cent of installations have occurred outside inner-city areas.
Federal Member for Bonner Kara Cook said the strong local take-up shows families are looking for practical ways to reduce their energy costs.
“Backyards in Bonner are benefiting from cheaper home batteries in record numbers,” she said.
Across Australia, more than a quarter of a million households, small businesses and community organisations have installed batteries through the program.
About half of those installations occurred alongside new or upgraded solar systems.
Batteries allow households to store solar energy generated during the day and use it at night, reducing reliance on peak electricity prices and helping ease pressure on the power grid.
Ms Cook said families across the electorate were embracing the opportunity to maximise their solar investment while lowering their power bills.
“From Wynnum West to Wishart and Hemmant to Holland Park, 1,824 Bonner families and local businesses are taking advantage of their solar, saving money on their power bills and doing their bit for the environment thanks to Labor’s Cheaper Home Batteries program,” she said.
“We promised to deliver real-practical cost of living relief for families – this is what the program is all about.
“These results show our community is getting on with it, taking up batteries and backing a cleaner energy future, powered by our Queensland sunshine.
“People here don’t want slogans. They want bills that are easier to pay, and a plan that delivers. That is exactly what this program is doing.”
Suburbs with strong participation include Mount Gravatt East, Wishart, Rochedale South, Carindale, Manly West, Wynnum West, Wakerley, Gumdale, Mackenzie, Tingalpa, Hemmant and Holland Park.
Ms Cook said the batteries would help reduce household energy costs during peak usage times.
“Whether it’s cooling the house down with air con, starting the dishwasher or switching on the washing machine – all these will become cheaper for Bonner families thanks to Cheaper Home Batteries,” she said.
“The Coalition want to slow down cheaper renewables and keep people stuck with higher bills. Labor is getting on with the job, cleaner, cheaper, reliable energy for every community.”
