REDLANDS residents are being urged to prepare their homes, families and pets now, with bushfire and severe weather season approaching.
Redland City Council is using Get Ready Week, from October 5 to 11, to remind households that taking a few simple steps before an emergency can make a major difference when disaster hits.
Acting Mayor and Local Disaster Management Group Acting Chair Julie Talty said residents should understand the risks in their area, make an emergency plan and check their household emergency kit.
“It’s important that emergency kits are up to date and include items such as bottled water, toiletries, a battery-powered radio, torch, spare batteries, important documents, medication, and portable chargers,” Cr Talty said.
“While we can’t prevent severe weather, we can all take steps to be prepared.
“Taking small actions now can make a big difference when every second counts in a disaster.”
Residents are also being encouraged to plan for heatwaves, including considering how extreme heat could affect vulnerable family members, neighbours and pets.
As part of Get Ready Week, Council officers will visit the Mount Cotton State School sleepout to speak with students about preparation.
