THE Redland Performing Arts Centre forecourt redevelopment has been recognised as one of Queensland’s leading community public-space projects.

Redland City Council’s project was named the 2026 Queensland winner of Community-Based Initiative of the Year at the Parks & Leisure Australia Queensland Awards of Excellence.

The award recognises initiatives delivering meaningful community benefits through parks, public spaces and leisure facilities.

Acting Mayor Julie Talty said the redevelopment had transformed the area into a more welcoming, accessible and flexible place for people to gather before and around performances.

“With a revitalised, vibrant civic space for people to gather and connect ahead of performances, the show really does begin in the forecourt now,” she said.

“Increased use of the area also highlights the impact of thoughtful design on wellbeing and liveability for the Redlands Coast community.”

Arts, Culture and Heritage portfolio representative Cr Paul Bishop said the forecourt was already being activated in new ways.

“This award from PLA demonstrates the value of a community-focused approach, and recognises RPAC’s project among the leading parks, leisure and community initiatives across Queensland,” he said.

Economic Development portfolio representative Cr Peter Mitchell said the redevelopment had produced a 30 per cent increase in community use and improved the venue’s event capacity.

“This is a great example of how targeted investment in public spaces can support local visitation, activity and economic growth,” he said.

The $1.867 million project was funded through the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

It will now progress to the Parks & Leisure Australia National Awards of Excellence in December, competing against other regional winners.
