LONG-PLANNED upgrades to the Manly Boat Harbour boat ramps are now underway, with locals divided over whether the works will improve safety and access or worsen parking and congestion issues on the peninsula.
The State Government has begun maintenance on the southern ramp, with the northern ramp to follow.
In a statement, the Department of Transport and Main Roads said the project would deliver “grout filled mattresses to strengthen scour protection, new toe planks on the lower sections of the ramps and restoration of rock shoulders where required”, and that the work would “help maintain reliable boating access to Moreton Bay”.
TMR also noted the timing was deliberate, saying the agency had scheduled the works outside of the peak spring school holiday period to minimise community impacts.
But some residents argued online that the upgrades failed to address the broader pressures facing the peninsula, particularly parking availability and the competing needs of boaters, sailors and restaurant patrons.
TMR says one ramp will remain open throughout construction with both ramps expected to be completed by December, weather permitting.
