A LOVE of Chevrolets and a lifelong commitment to helping others inspired Valda Moore to organise a car cruise day that brought together classic car lovers and members of disability support organisation Myhorizon.
Now in its third year, the event saw 35 people from Myhorizon’s Capalaba and Wynnum centres, along with their carers, team up with members of the Queensland Chevrolet Club Inc. for a joyride through the Bayside.
Ms Moore said participants enjoyed a 90-minute cruise in a convoy of 21 classic Chevrolets, taking in scenic Wellington Point and the Wynnum Esplanade before enjoying lunch at the club’s Carindale clubhouse.
“The response was great. Everyone loved it,” she said.
“The people from Myhorizon got to drive in beautiful cars, and the car owners enjoyed doing their little bit to bring joy to these kids.
“I say ‘kids’ because everyone is younger than me.”
The “kids” range in age from 25 to 45.
Ms Moore, 69, of Manly West, said helping others had been a lifelong calling.
The eldest of eight children, she spent years working in aged care before retiring at 59 – only to return to work out of boredom.
“I got bored being retired so I joined Myhorizon,” she said.
As a disability support worker, she helps clients with lifestyle activities including shopping, exercise, bowling, gym sessions, movies, and even work placements at Meals on Wheels.
“I get great satisfaction from this,” she said.
“I am doing something that improves their lives and giving them a lifestyle to enjoy and to remember.
“I tell you what, these people have great social lives.
“There are also recreational activities, markets, Halloween activities, multicultural days, long weekends, nights out and discos.
“Trust me, there is a lot to do and always something going on.”
A proud Chevrolet owner herself, Ms Moore has a 2019 Chevrolet Camaro, a 1964 Chevrolet Impala wagon,
and is currently building a 1956 Chevrolet Two-Ten sedan.
She praised Myhorizon as a not-for-profit organisation that promotes independent living, social inclusion, and meaningful employment for people with disability.
“It creates lifestyle and employment and offers training while allowing for independent lives and social enterprise,” she said.
