SINCE the doors of Straddievarious Gallery first opened at Point Lookout on North Stradbroke Island in 2018, Jacquie Holmes has been at its heart.

As gallery manager, Jacquie plays a pivotal role in supporting local artisans and upholding the gallery’s reputation for high-quality, curated works.

“As gallery manager, I’m responsible for financial tracking and budgets, and I support all our artisans in the business of selling art,” she said.

“It’s a place for artists to come and chat about the ‘how to’ of selling art – whether it’s finishing, pricing, framing decisions, or weighing up investment versus return.”

Having been involved since the beginning, Jacquie was instantly drawn to the gallery’s mission.

Now based at Raby Bay Harbour, she says the sense of community continues to inspire her.

“I always enjoy a morning coffee from Chop n Chill,” she said.

“There’s a great vibe from my neighbours – Raby Bay Resort, Cold Rock Ice Cream, Chop n Chill.

“We all support and encourage each other, especially on those rainy days when sales are slow.”

Among her proudest achievements is helping artists build their confidence and develop the skills they need to succeed commercially.

“Being able to coach and support the artists in the business of selling art,” she said.

“And being successful at curating and selecting affordable art for sale to our local community.”

Jacquie’s eye for detail and appreciation of creativity guide her curatorial decisions.

“I’m passionate about colour and excited that you never know what an artist will bring in – the curious and uniquely original,” she said.

When asked to describe the gallery’s culture in three words, Jacquie doesn’t hesitate:

“Passionately supporting artists.”

Behind the scenes, she is committed to maintaining a high standard.

“I will politely say no when I feel an item isn’t right for the gallery,” she said.

“We’re committed to offering artworks that meet a gallery standard in support of our local community artisans.”

Her approach is grounded in a simple yet powerful philosophy:

“Attitude is everything. Be nice, and make customers feel welcome to admire the beautiful artworks in the gallery,” she said.

Outside of her work, Jacquie leads a creative and active lifestyle.

“Aqua aerobics, beading, and socialising with friends,” she said.

“I’m a bit of a foodie. I love to cook with fresh ingredients. Being coeliac, it’s important I know where my food comes from.”

With her blend of business acumen, creative flair and community spirit, Jacquie Holmes continues to be a driving force behind Straddievarious Gallery’s success.
