IN a heartfelt tribute to an unforgettable educator, mentor, and musician, Capalaba State College hosted a memorable event to honour the retirement of Mick Quinn.
The celebration, filled with surprise performances and emotional speeches, brought together Mr Quinn’s family, friends, colleagues, and former students, all eager to pay tribute to a man whose legacy touched countless lives over the past two decades.
The evening began with hosts Maddy Robinson and Steve Brady encouraging attendees to explore the Mick Quinn merch tent, sign the graffiti wall, and take part in the surprise festivities to come.
Mr Brady took the stage to reflect on Mr Quinn’s remarkable 20-year tenure at the college, noting the significant impact he has had on both the students and the school community.
“His selflessness has helped thousands of students over the years to achieve their best and he is respected by all that meet him,” Mr Brady said.
“His caring, kind and patient approach has impacted so many over 20 years and that is evident by the number of guests we have here tonight.”
The evening was also graced by Mr Quinn’s family, including his wife Kerryn and sons Landon and Luke, along with a special message from his son Brandt, who could not be present.
One of the night’s most emotional moments came when it was revealed that Mr Quinn’s old band, The Coyotes, was backstage ready to make a surprise appearance.
The band, which had last performed together in 2019, was a significant part of Mr Quinn’s life.
The band members, including Steve Dabinett, Andy Graham, and Glenn Doyle, took the stage to perform several songs, leaving Mr Quinn, and the entire room, in awe.
As the evening progressed, it was clear that Mr Quinn’s legacy extends far beyond the walls of Capalaba State College.
One of his former students, Shantell Thompson, who graduated in 2022, shared what she would miss most about him was “everything”.
“He understood me and helped me through a lot with schooling,” Shantell said.
Deah Jones, a former student from 2021, described him as the greatest teacher she ever had.
“Mr Quinn was supportive and helped every student who needed help,” she said. “I am very happy to have had him as a teacher.”
The night ended with a final surprise: Mr Quinns ick was invited to the stage for a meet-and-greet with his admirers, offering a chance for attendees to get photos, autographs, and express their gratitude.
