REDLANDS is likely to have a new state representative next week as LNP candidate Rebecca Young appears on track to defeat Labor’s incumbent Kim Richards at this weekend’s State Election.
The LNP has consistently led in opinion polls leading up to the election, with Redlands one of the crucial seats likely to sway the way of the Opposition.
Ms Young, a born and bred Redlander, mother, businessowner and former Redlands Coast Chamber of Commerce president, was pre-selected by the LNP almost two years ago.
She is running against Ms Richards, who has held the seat since 2017.
Prior to that, Redlands was held by the Coalition between 2009 and 2017.
Ms Young’s name will appear second on the ballot paper below Legalise Cannabis Queensland’s Suzanne Spierenburg and above Animal Justice Party’s Liela D’Rose, Family First’s Marita Neville, One Nation’s Gary Williamson, The Greens’ Kristie Lockhart, and Ms Richards.
The LNP candidate’s campaign has largely been built on addressing crime in the community, cost-of-living and the local health system.
Ms Young has also committed to a review of Cleveland-Redland Bay Rd works, delivering a marine centre of excellence for Russell Island, and parking relief for Southern Moreton Bay Islands, should an LNP government be formed.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed engaging with the community I spend my life in every day,” she said.
“It is brilliant to meet so many passionate locals who love our area, but more and more I’m hearing exactly how hard Labor’s cost-of-living and crime crises are hurting our community, and it’s heartbreaking.
“An LNP government will restore safety where you live, ensure respect for your money, health services when you need them and ensure you have a place to call home.”
Meanwhile, Ms Richards’ campaign highlights include a $1.6 billion commitment to stage 2 of the Redland Hospital expansion, a $95 million Weinam Creek Multi Storey Carpark commitment, and a $5.1 million-plus Skilling Queenslanders for Work Redlands Programs.
“Only our re-elected government will deliver $1.6 billion for the Redland Hospital, $95 million for the Weinam Creek Carpark, a new high school for Redland Bay, 75% barge subsidies and more,” Ms Richards said.
“I’ll always put Redlanders first and work hard to deliver the projects our community needs.”
