METRO MOVES: The push is on to extend the Metro leading up to the 2032 Olympic Games
SHARE

A significant expansion
of the Brisbane
Metro would see the service
extend into Redland City
as part of a “long-term”
plan for 22 new stations
and stops in the north,
south, east and at Brisbane
Airport.
Queensland Premier Steven
Miles was in Capalaba
last week to unveil the plan
alongside Brisbane Lord
Mayor Adrian Schrinner,
confirming local and state
governments had joined
forces to fund a detailed
business case jointly seeking
Federal Government support for the expansion.
The business case will
determine the feasibility of
expanding the Metro across
council boundaries south to
Springwood, east to Capalaba,
north to Carseldine and
connecting to the DFO and
Brisbane Airport.
The proposed expansion of
Metro Line 4 would see the
service extend past its original
final stop at Langlands Park
to stops at Coorparoo Square,
Camp Hill, Carina, Carindale
and Chandler before terminating
at Capalaba.
Mr Miles said the plan
aimed to address growing
population and increasing
congestion and would expand
the Metro ahead of the
Brisbane 2032 Olympic and
Paralympic Games.
“This will deliver additional
rapid transit solutions for
our growing region, bringing
people from these bustling
suburbs into and out of the
city and connecting them with
all of our fantastic precincts,”
he said. “I want to see more of
our busy and growing suburbs
connected to the public transport
network, in turn taking
more cars off the road.
“That’s good for busting
congestion, and good for our
environment.”
Brisbane City Council is
seeking $50 million in business
case funding, with a state
and federal funding decision
expected later this year,
business cases completed by
mid-2026, and the expanded
Metro operational by 2031.
Local and state government
have previously collaborated
to divide funding to increase
Brisbane’s bus and Metro
services and bring forward the
start of Metro services.
“This is a truly regional
partnership that will see
benefits beyond the city
of Brisbane boundaries,”
Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian
Schrinner said.
“We know that every day
there is a massive movement
of people, vehicles, traffic
across those boundaries, and
this is an opportunity to get
more people onto public transport,
to reduce congestion
into the future, and to leave a
fantastic Games legacy.
“We’ve got the councils
onside, we’ve got the State
Government onside, we’ve
been talking with the Federal
Government, and I’m
optimistic that we’ll get all
three levels of government
onboard to plan the future of
public transport in South East
Queensland.”
Redland City Council
Mayor Jos Mitchell said the
project would be pivotal to the
Redlands’ economic growth
and untapped potential.
“It’s going to help our
workforce, the large part
of which travels into Brisbane
daily, it’s going to help
our students with access to
academic facilities, and it’s
going to be pivotal in growing
our economic development,”
Cr Mitchell said. “It’s also
going to be pivotal in our
tourism industries, particularly
eco-tourism, and it’s going
to be pivotal in our future
population growth.”
Member for Capalaba Don
Brown said he had been calling
for the Metro to Capalaba
since 2018.
“It’s a fantastic announcement
to ensure we get the
public transport infrastructure
out to our growing region,”
Mr Brown said. “This Metro
will unlock the growth that’s
happening to the south of
our city, particularly here at
Capalaba.”
