DISGRULTED drivers from North Stradbroke Island say their daily commute to the Victoria Point jetty car park is becoming more dangerous with each passing day.
Commuters from Karragarra, Macleay, Lamb and Russell Islands are frustrated with having to manoeuvre their vehicles through the unsealed car park every day and have pleaded with Redland City Council to fix the much-maligned parking area.
“Every time I use the car park, the undercarriage of my car scrapes on the massive lumps and bumps the surface – no matter how you twist and turn to try to avoid them,” Russell Island resident Carol Minhinnick said.
“We are not on a 4WD off-road experience, these are average suburban cars simply trying to find a park in what is becoming an unsafe area.
“It’s absolute carnage trying to get a park there and it’s getting worse.”
Fellow commuter Carole Hardy said the issue had been ongoing for years and she asked Council to explain how it was spending islander ratepayers’ money.
“I’ve been living on Russell Island for five and a half now, and in that time it has become harder and harder to find a park,” Mrs Hardy said.
“I now have to park further away, and I will not even attempt to go in the dirt car park due to the potholes.
“Council is happy to take our rates and do nothing to accommodate the islanders’ needs.
“Our rates money should be spent on improving that island and bayside parking for islanders.
“This will always be an ongoing problem as the island’s population continues to grow.”
Mrs Hardy said there had never been enough parking to accommodate the growing population and doubted there ever would be.
“My question to council is why the Moore’s Rd car park wasn’t built as a multi-storey car park whilst building it.”
