A philanthropic donation of $300,000 from Haymans Electrical has catalyzed a three-year Create Exchange initiative at Redland Art Gallery. This ambitious program will integrate artist-residency style exhibitions and activations within the Redlands cultural precinct, fostering collaborations and amplifying community involvement. Launched on November 22 at the gallery, the program aims to establish a creative dialogue and spark innovative artistic connections.

Kerryanne Farrer, the gallery’s manager, expressed gratitude for the opportunity, emphasizing the spotlight on Quandamooka artists.

The inaugural Create Exchange project, titled Ngumpi (meaning Home), will run from April 7 to June 4, 2024, showcasing the artistry of Sonja and Elisa Jane Carmichael. Their artist residency and exhibition deeply resonate with Redlands Coast, reflecting a profound connection to family, Country, and cultural roots.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams hailed the Create Exchange program as a gateway for residents and visitors to immerse themselves in the artists’ works, enriching the city’s cultural landscape. She underscored the gallery’s significance as a cultural asset and expressed pride in securing additional funding support for this initiative.

RPAC Services Manager Creative Arts, Brad Rush, envisioned the project attracting diverse audiences, fostering lifelong learning, and facilitating cultural and creative exchanges.

The Carmichaels’ artistic expression revolves around ancestral knowledge, matrilineal connections, and enduring relationships with Quandamooka’s sands, lands, and waters. The exhibition will feature a blend of new and existing woven works crafted from natural and recycled materials, alongside compelling print media.
