A $10,000 grant may sound substantial, but once traffic management, insurance and compliance costs are covered, much of that funding can disappear before an event begins.

This reflects a broader challenge facing community events across Australia.

An industry survey by the Australian Centre for Regional Events found that 54 per cent of respondents identified sponsorship and grants as areas needing additional support, while almost 29 per cent reported declining financial health.

These pressures are also being felt across the Redlands Coast where rising costs are affecting sporting clubs, charities, fundraisers and community events.

“Businesses haven’t lost their willingness to support the community, but economic uncertainty has changed their capacity to give,” a Chamber spokesperson said.

“Sponsorship and donations are now more carefully considered, and we’re seeing the flow-on effects across local events and community organisations,”

Even local Christmas celebrations are struggling to secure the additional support needed to proceed.

Sponsorship approaches are changing.

Rather than relying on one major sponsor, organisers are exploring smaller partnerships that suit business budgets while offering benefits such as promotion, customer visitation and community goodwill.

Early planning is essential.

Organisers should approach potential sponsors up to 12 months ahead, supported by a clear sponsorship prospectus and marketing strategy.

Local Chambers of Commerce can assist with introductions and connections to the business community, ideally from the earliest planning stages.

Despite these challenges, new opportunities are emerging.

Recent conversations with Indian and Turkish community representatives have highlighted interest in multicultural celebrations, including a Turkish event planned for November.

Many organisers aim to offer free admission, attracting visitors while supporting local hospitality, retail and tourism businesses.

Conversations with event organisers also reveal excitement about the opportunities surrounding the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

However, this optimism is accompanied by uncertainty about rising costs, economic conditions and whether sufficient funding will be available to turn ideas into successful events.

Stronger partnerships and more sustainable funding will be critical to ensuring such events remain viable.
