By KARA COOK, FEDERAL MP FOR BONNER
ONE of the things I love most about representing Bonner is the diversity of the people, cultures and traditions that make our community so special.
Throughout the year, that diversity comes to life in the celebrations and community events held across our suburbs.
Diwali is a wonderful example.
Known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali is a special time for many families in Bonner.
Homes are lit with diyas, loved ones gather, food is shared and communities celebrate with colour, music and joy.
The festival also carries a powerful message.
Light over darkness, good over evil, and hope for the future.
Diwali holds different traditions and significance for Hindus, Sikhs and Jains.
It’s wonderful to see those traditions celebrated so proudly here in our community, and it’s an opportunity for all of us to learn more about the people we share it with.
Some of the best events I attend are those where people come together, share a meal, try something new and strike up a conversation.
Those moments remind us of what community is all about.
Behind every celebration are families, cultural and faith groups, volunteers and local businesses who give their time and energy to share their traditions with the wider community.
Their work makes Bonner a richer place to live.
I was grateful to attend the BAPS Kids Diwali Festival earlier this month and I’m looking forward to the Hindu Council of Australia’s local Deepavali celebration.
Everyone is welcome to join the festivities on Saturday from 4-9pm, at Mt Gravatt Show-grounds.
There’ll be food, music, stalls and fun for the whole family.
I’m incredibly proud to represent a part of South East Queensland where so many cultures are celebrated and everyone has a place.
To everyone celebrating with family, friends and community, Happy Diwali.
May the Festival of Lights bring joy, hope and special moments with the people you love.
