SPECIAL Olympics Australia is celebrating a major milestone in 2026, marking 50 years of promoting inclusion, opportunity and community through sport for people with intellectual disability and/or autism.
From the Redlands, a strong local contingent will be part of the celebrations, with 36 athletes from the region set to compete at this year’s National Games, as excitement builds among competitors, families and supporters.
Federal Member for Bowman Henry Pike said the anniversary was a significant moment for the organisation and the athletes involved.
“The impact Special Olympics has had over 50 years is life-changing to so many,” Mr Pike said.
“It’s about championing sport to transform lives, fostering confidence, connection and inclusion, both on and off the field.”
One selected athlete said, “With these Games only every four years, I am pleased to be selected to represent Redlands club at the National Games,” while another added, “Looking forward to training camp prior to the Games before the fun starts.”
Athletes’ parents have also shared in the excitement, with Special Olympics Australia Redlands Club chair David Cowley saying many competitors were thrilled when they received the news.
“Athletes’ parents told us that on learning they were selected they had a big, big grin, and were genuinely excited to be going,” Mr Cowley said.
Founded in 1976, the organisation has spent five decades breaking down barriers and creating pathways for athletes to participate, compete and thrive both on and off the field.
Over that time, Special Olympics Australia has delivered year-round sport, health and leadership programs to tens of thousands of athletes nationwide.
The Redlands community will host a special fundraising luncheon on Friday, June 19, at Barcella Restaurant in Victoria Point, aimed at raising vital funds for the local team.
“This event is a fantastic example of our community coming together to back these incredible athletes,” Mr Pike said.
“Every ticket sold directly contributes to helping local competitors represent the Redlands on the national stage.”
The luncheon will feature a two-course meal, entertainment from The Ironing Maidens, guest speakers, raffles and more, with $30 from every ticket supporting Redlands Special Olympics.
Mr Pike said the milestone year was the perfect opportunity for the community to get behind its athletes.
“There is no better way to celebrate 50 years of Special Olympics Australia than by backing the next generation of athletes right here in the Redlands,” he said.
The milestone year will also feature one of the organisation’s biggest events, with the 2026 Special Olympics Australia National Games set to be held in Melbourne from October 19-23.
Staged every four years, the National Games will bring together athletes from across the country to compete in 12 sports across five days of competition.
Competitors will be supported by coaches, volunteers, families and the broader community, with the event designed to highlight ability, determination and the power of inclusion.
Mr Cowley said the Games were about far more than competition.
“The National Games are not just a competition, they are all about courage, connection and community, shining a light on the power of inclusion,” he said.
