COUNCILLOR Lisa Atwood has thanked the community for its patience after a major water main burst on Wynnum Rd at Tingalpa turned a routine Monday in Brisbane’s east into chaos.
Cr Atwood said residents had shown understanding while Urban Utilities carried out urgent repairs.
“We’re so incredibly grateful to the community for their patience as Urban Utilities undertook these important emergency works,” she said.
“This was a mammoth task, and to see the road reopened so soon is a credit to the hard working Urban Utilities teams.”
Urban Utilities Operations and Maintenance Executive Leader David Brooker said crews had successfully repaired the pipe.
“Our crews have successfully repaired a large water pipe that burst on Wynnum Rd near Hamilton St at Tingalpa.
“This was a complex job with many of our team members working quickly to shut the water off, drain and excavate the site, carry out weld repairs and restore the road.”
Mr Brooker said water was diverted from other parts of the network to minimise supply impacts for customers, and bottled water was made available for collection.
“We understand responsive works can be disruptive, and we thank the community for their patience while we carried out these essential repairs,” he said.
“Urban Utilities will continue its proactive approach to maintenance, with crews completing regular inspections on the water network to ensure safe and reliable services for customers.
“Investigations into the cause of the burst are ongoing.”
The incident, which occurred between Boundary St and Hamilton St, carved what was described as a “giant hole” into the roadway, forcing the immediate closure of Wynnum-bound lanes and triggering widespread traffic diversions.
Wynnum-bound traffic was diverted through Boundary St, while city-bound lanes remained open. However, the detours placed heavy pressure on surrounding residential streets.
Drivers were repeatedly urged to slow down after reports that a pedestrian had been struck and another vehicle sideswiped amid the congestion. There were traffic impacts at both affected locations, with motorists urged to take care.
While the damaged pipe was offline, Urban Utilities diverted water into affected areas from other parts of the network to minimise the impact on customers.
The resurfaced road has since reopened.
