THE historic entry gates dedicated to one of Redlands Coast’s true statesmen have been given a fresh lease on life, proudly standing at the entrance to the Cleveland showgrounds.
James Henry Norman Price – the revered shire chairman affectionately known across the district as “Norm” – led the Redland Shire from 1949 to 1961 after years of service as a councillor.
His commitment to community was so widely respected that in 1960 the Cleveland Agricultural Horticultural and Industrial Society moved to rename the showgrounds in his honour, a decision endorsed by Council later that year.
Just months later, an ornate brick-and-iron archway bearing the words Norm Price Park was erected in time for the 53rd annual Redlands Show on July 15, 1961.
Fast-forward more than six decades and the landmark has been meticulously restored, with Redland City Mayor Jos Mitchell meeting two of Norm’s grandchildren – Lorraine Newton and John Price – to celebrate the renewal.
Funded through the Mayor’s Community Infrastructure Program, the works included restoring the heritage sign and brick pillars, as well as new plantings, mulch and garden edging to revive the entrance.
“It was a great delight to receive an email of thanks from members of the Price family and an even greater delight to meet them in person,” Cr Mitchell said.
“Norm Price had an amazing life and left an incredible legacy.
“He served during World War I and received the Military Cross for his service.
“Norm lived with the aftermath effects of the war and went on to marry and have four children.”
Later in life, Norm became a shire councillor and served as Shire Chairman.
“He was awarded an MBE for his service to the community in 1961,” Cr Mitchell said.
“Speaking with Norm’s family offers greater insight into his amazing life and the indelible mark he has left on this community.”
Today, Norm Price Park – the Redland Showgrounds – remains one of Cleveland’s most valued community hubs, home to sporting clubs, the Redland Coast Museum and a bustling calendar of events right in the heart of town.
