A HANDS-ON trauma care workshop aimed at equipping everyday locals with the skills to save lives will be held in Capalaba this month, as aeromedical charity CareFlight expands its community training push.
The free two-day Trauma Care Workshop will take place at Redland Community Centre on April 18 and 19, offering participants practical, scenario-based training designed to prepare them for real-world emergencies.
CareFlight, best known for its aeromedical missions across Australia, is continuing its national rollout of workshops in 2026, focusing on building resilience in communities and strengthening the response capacity of those most likely to be first on scene.
Emergencies often place significant strain on local health services, particularly in regional areas, with community members frequently the first to respond before professional help arrives. The Capalaba sessions will simulate accident scenarios using lifelike medical mannequins, allowing participants to develop critical decision-making and response skills in a controlled environment.
Head of Education and Training Margarita Obeid said early intervention by bystanders can be crucial in determining patient outcomes.
“The first few minutes after an incident can be the difference between life and death. Community members play a vital role, often arriving before medical professionals. By partnering with local organisations, we are reinforcing the links in the chain of survival to ensure better care is available as soon as the incident occurs,” she said.
“CareFlight’s complimentary workshops act as a boost for the emergency services and are an example of our commitment to building resilience in regional communities. CareFlight is proud to offer this essential training, supported by government grants and sponsors. Our goal is to empower locals with the skills and confidence needed to create a safer community.”
Delivered by experienced doctors, paramedics and nurses, the training covers patient triage, managing complex injuries and conducting effective handovers to emergency services.
Since launching the program in 2011, CareFlight has delivered thousands of workshops nationwide, targeting both community members and first responders to improve outcomes in trauma situations.
The workshops are free to attend, with funding support from the Australian Government and contributions from donors and businesses.
