Six past commodores and the current commodore attended the launch of the summer sailing season at the Cleveland Yacht Club on September 11.

They were Brian Russell, Alan Cook, Lex Stanbridge, Al Lacoste, Don Clegg, Steve Profke and current commodore Steve Lawie.

This attendance augered well for the club’s 120th anniversary celebrations in 2024.

The launch was also a launch of a new Rigid Inflatable Boat for the club, named after former commodore Brian Russell.

The $50,000 boat was bought with donated funds from an anonymous benefactor, the sale of its former rescue boat and a Gambling Community Benefit fund grant of $35,000.

State member Kim Richards said this was part of $570,000 worth of grants given to 12 organisations.

Speaking at the launch as rear commodore and safety officer, Tim Brewer said he had been a frequent customer to the club’s rescue boats.

“These boats have served me well. I am happy we have such a superior vessel to continue the work,” he said.

Tim said the boat was able to bump against other boats, was quicker in an emergency situation and easy to get people in and out of the water.

At the launch, club members made their annual pledges to stand together and commit to creating a family friendly environment.

The emphasis was on safety, inclusivity and celebrating the joy of sailing.

After the season launch, members went on a race from the clubhouse to Coochiemudlo Island. The club holds races most Sundays.

The summer season runs until April with the winter season from June to August. The club has about 60 participating members. Interested people can phone 0402 985 427.
