SOUTHERN Moreton Bay Island commuters face a parking shake-up from October 28 when the gravel car park at Weinam Creek Marina temporarily closes for works.

The seven-day car park will be shut from Wednesday, October 28, forcing regular users to find alternative spaces – including at Moores Road – as the Weinam Creek precinct moves into its next phase.

Further parking changes are expected to be rolled out progressively, with Economic Development Queensland promising more information before each change takes effect.

State Member for Redlands Rebecca Young said commuters needed to prepare now.

“For years, our island community has been calling for a better long-term parking solution at Weinam Creek, and our government has taken the steps needed to move this project forward,” Mrs Young said.

“We are now at the point where people will start to see changes on the ground, so it is important everyone who relies on this precinct knows what is changing, when it is happening and what their options are.”

Ferry services will continue uninterrupted during the transition, with about 1150 parking spaces expected to remain available across the precinct, including at the marina and Moores Rd.

Mrs Young said the changes would require some adjustment for island residents and Redland Bay commuters who rely on the busy terminal.

“Anyone who uses Weinam Creek regularly knows the parking situation has needed a long-term solution for many, many years,” she said.

“This next phase will require some adjustment, and my focus is making sure people have clear information.”

She pointed to permanent 50-cent public transport fares, subsidised vehicle-barge travel and car-share options as alternatives for residents who do not need to leave a vehicle on the mainland every day.

“October 28 is the first change, not the last, so I really encourage everyone who uses Weinam Creek to stay informed as each stage is introduced,” Mrs Young said.

Commuters can find updates at EDQ’s Weinam Creek Priority Development Area consultation page.
