REDLANDS Cycling and Multi-sport Club athletes have overcome strong winds and bitterly cold temperatures to secure five age-group podium finishes at the Toowoomba Wellcamp Duathlon.
Held on exposed roads surrounding Wellcamp Airport, the event tested competitors across Standard and Sprint distance races.
Standard Distance competitors faced a 10km run, 40km ride and another 5km run, while the Sprint Distance featured a 5km run, 20km ride and 2.5km run.
Chrissy Sands, Kelly Phuah and David Murtagh represented Redlands in the Standard Distance, while Jo Johnson, Linda Meredith, Rosie Kimber and Sally McLean contested the Sprint Distance.
Strong winds made the cycling leg particularly demanding, testing riders’ strength, handling skills and concentration throughout the exposed course.
Despite the difficult winter conditions, the Redlands contingent produced an impressive collection of results.
Phuah won her Standard Distance age group, while Murtagh finished second in his division.
In the Sprint Distance, Johnson claimed second place in her age group, with Meredith and McLean each securing age-group victories.
Another highlight came when Sands completed the gruelling Standard Distance event and crossed the finish line to a memorable welcome from her family.
The moment reflected the support and encouragement surrounding the club’s athletes as they tackled one of the toughest events of the season.
The Wellcamp Duathlon proved a test of endurance, but Redlands athletes rose to the challenge and showed the resilience, determination and camaraderie that have become hallmarks of the club.
