THORNLANDS resident Robin Johnson is preparing to step onto one of the biggest stages of his life after being selected to represent Australia at the GKR Karate World Cup in the United Kingdom.
Johnson, 57, is well known locally as the Managing Director of Provincial Building, a Redlands-based construction and development company.
But outside the boardroom, he has spent the past six years quietly building his passion for karate.
What began as support for his then 11-year-old son has grown into a defining personal journey.
“I joined just to help build his confidence,” Johnson said.
“I never imagined it would become such an important part of my own life.”
Today, he trains twice a week in the dojo and supplements his preparation with Pilates, hot yoga and strength conditioning.
He has also adjusted his diet and lifestyle to ensure he arrives at the World Cup in peak condition.
“Representing Australia is a privilege,” he said.
“I want to make sure I’m as prepared, focused and committed as I possibly can.”
Johnson said the mental and technical side of karate has been just as demanding as the physical preparation.
He spends hours analysing his movement, reactions and scoring opportunities.
“Small improvements can make a big difference,” he said.
“It’s not just about training harder but training smarter.”
Despite the intensity, Johnson remains grounded.
He isn’t fundraising for the trip and says the best support the Redlands community can offer is encouragement.
“For me, this journey isn’t about personal recognition,” he said.
“It’s about representing Australia, GKR Karate and the Redlands community with pride.”
He hopes his story inspires others to take on new challenges, no matter their age.
“If my journey encourages even one person to try something new or believe they’re capable of more, that will mean a great deal to me,” he said.
Johnson will travel to the UK later this year carrying not only the Australian colours but the support of the Redlands community behind him.
