A TREASURED piece of Australian cricket history has found a permanent home at Redlands Tigers, with the family of former Test star Peter Burge donating his framed 1962-63 Australian blazer to the club.
Peter’s son John Burge and grandson Jack Burge presented the jacket at Peter Burge Oval, creating a special link between the former Australian and Queensland batsman, his family and the club he once represented.
Before becoming Redlands Tigers, the club played Brisbane Grade Cricket as Eastern Suburbs, where Burge was part of its proud history.
Burge played 42 Tests for Australia from 1955 to 1966, scoring 2290 runs.
The donated jacket dates to the 1962-63 Ashes series in which Burge scored 103 and an unbeaten 52 in the final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground to help Australia retain the urn.
Redlands Cricket president Sean Lloyd said the donation was a fitting tribute to one of the club’s great cricketing figures.
“On behalf of Redlands Cricket, I sincerely thank John and Jack Burge for entrusting the club with such an important piece of their family’s history,” Mr Lloyd said.
“Peter Burge’s 1962-63 Australian Test jacket is a significant addition to the Tigers’ historical collection and a fitting tribute to one of the great figures in our club’s history.
“Our club is incredibly proud of its heritage and of the award-winning grounds that carry Peter’s name.
“Peter Burge Oval is recognised as Queensland Premier Cricket’s number one ground, and it is fitting that this treasured jacket will be preserved and displayed at the home of the Redlands Tigers for future generations to appreciate.”
The framed jacket will be displayed by the Tigers as a lasting reminder of Burge’s contribution to Australian, Queensland and Redlands cricket.
