Mayor’s promise of transparency faces its biggest challenge to date

MAYOR Jos Mitchell’s latest social media post provides the clearest explanation yet of her extended leave.

The Mayor has revealed she has been dealing with several health issues over the past 12 weeks, including one requiring major surgery and recovery. She says medical certificates have been provided, she is focused on recuperation and she looks forward to returning as soon as possible.

That is an important and welcome clarification.

But after her leave was extended until October 31 – a total of 31 weeks – the community was entitled to know whether her absence was temporary and whether she intended to return.

Mayor Mitchell has now answered that central question: yes, she intends to come back.

Her post also addresses speculation about why she has been away. She has described a genuine medical situation requiring surgery and recuperation, rather than leaving the community to fill an information vacuum with rumours, assumptions and what she has described as “fake news”.

People understand illness, surgery and recovery. Most would want any person facing serious health challenges to have the time and space needed to recover properly

But there remains a difficult public-interest question.

Before she was elected Mayor, Jos Mitchell made transparency a central promise to Redlands voters.

She also pledged to deliver “the best possible representation for our Redlands community”.

Those commitments do not mean she must disclose personal medical information.

They do mean that, where possible, the community should receive clear updates about the continuity of its elected leadership.

The Mayor has said she looks forward to returning “as soon as possible”. That is reassuring, but it is not yet a timeframe.

With Cr Julie Talty continuing as Acting Mayor until at least October 31, ratepayers still deserve regular, appropriate updates about whether the Mayor remains on track to return at the end of that period or whether more leave may be required.

There is also a lesson here for Council’s communication approach.

In the absence of a direct explanation from the Mayor, the public naturally looked for answers through Council, the State Government and social media.

That created space for speculation that could have been avoided by an earlier, brief statement confirming that the leave related to significant health issues and recovery.

Mayor Mitchell’s post demonstrates that privacy and transparency are not opposing principles. It is possible to protect personal medical details while still giving the community enough information to understand why its mayor is absent.

The post also makes it clear that recovery cannot always be scheduled to a political timetable. Major surgery and related health issues can require time, and a responsible return should be based on medical advice rather than public pressure.

However, the October 31 date should now be treated as a meaningful checkpoint. If the Mayor’s recovery is progressing as hoped, residents should be told whether she expects to resume her duties.

If her return must be delayed again, the community deserves a similarly prompt and candid explanation – without unnecessary detail, but with enough certainty to understand the leadership arrangements in place.

Cr Talty and the other councillors deserve credit for ensuring Council continues to operate and that civic duties are shared.

The Mayor says she has been assured that is occurring, and there is no suggestion Council has stopped.

Still, acting leadership should not become an open-ended arrangement without accountability or communication.

The question is no longer whether Mayor Mitchell intends to return.

She says she does.

The question now is whether she can provide the community with a realistic indication of when that return may be possible, once her recovery allows.
