WORK is set to begin on the next stage of the long-awaited $105 million Lindum rail crossing upgrade, with underground electrical cables to be relocated ahead of major construction.

The enabling works at the Kianawah Rd intersection mark a significant step towards overhauling one of Brisbane’s busiest and most dangerous level crossings.

The upgrade will include new traffic signals, a realigned road-rail crossing and a reconfigured intersection designed to create a safer, more perpendicular crossing.

The changes are expected to reduce crash risks, discourage dangerous driver behaviour and improve traffic movements through the area.

Federal Member for Bonner Kara Cook said residents had waited years to see substantial progress on the project.

“This is the kind of progress local residents have been waiting to see,” Ms Cook said.

“Relocating these underground cables is an important milestone and means the project is moving closer to major construction.”

Initial safety improvements were completed at the crossing in 2021, but major construction on the next stage is not expected to begin until mid-2027.

The project is also expected to improve freight movements to and from the Port of Brisbane by reducing disruptions along the dedicated freight rail line caused by safety-related closures.

The Australian Government has committed $85 million to the project, with the State Government and Brisbane City Council each contributing $10 million.

Ms Cook rejected recent claims by Brisbane Civic Cabinet chair Ryan Murphy that the Federal Government had not unlocked its funding.

Her office said the Commonwealth approved the release of funding after receiving the final information required from Brisbane City Council in late May.

“I’m pleased the Albanese Government has moved quickly to release our funding so this project can continue progressing,” Ms Cook said.

“This is an important investment in the safety of our community.”
