A LONG-AWAITED safety overhaul of the busy Lindum rail crossing has taken a major step forward with underground power works now complete and construction expected to begin next year.
The project is designed to make the notorious Bayside bottleneck safer and easier to navigate for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and local families.
Energex crews have spent the past four months relocating underground power cables around Lindum Station and along Lindum Rd, clearing the way for the next stage of the upgrade.
Detailed designs have also been completed, with Brisbane City Council now finalising environmental approvals and agreements with Queensland Rail and other service providers.
Tenders are expected to open in January 2027 with a construction contractor tipped to be appointed by the middle of the year.
The upgrade will deliver a straighter rail crossing, new traffic lights linked to rail boom gates and safer pedestrian crossings on Lindum, North, Sibley and Kianawah roads.
Turning arrangements at Sibley Rd and Kianawah Rd will also change.
Wider footpaths, new bike lanes on sections of Lindum and Kianawah roads, and a reduced 40km/h speed limit on roads approaching the crossing are also planned.
The busy open-level crossing has long been a concern for residents, with poor visibility and complicated nearby intersections making peak-hour travel difficult.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the completed power works marked important progress.
“The Lindum Open Level Crossing upgrade is a great example of what can be achieved when all three levels of government work together,” Cr Schrinner said.
“This is about fixing a busy local crossing, making journeys safer and keeping Brisbane moving.”
Wynnum Manly Ward Councillor Alex Givney said locals knew all too well how congested the area could become.
“Anyone who uses the Lindum crossing knows just how busy it can get, particularly during the morning and afternoon rush,” Cr Givney said. “A straighter crossing, new traffic lights and safer pedestrian crossings will make a real difference to local families.
“It’s great to see progress on a project that our community has wanted for so long.”
Doboy Ward Councillor Lisa Atwood said the finished project would improve safety and connections across the area.
“We’re making real progress towards delivering this important safety upgrade for the Lindum Open Level Crossing,” Cr Atwood said.
“The end result will be safer roads, better walking and cycling connections and a crossing that’s easier for everyone to use.”
The project is jointly funded by the Australian Government, Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council.
