FREE film screenings, a dementia health chat and information sessions will be held at Redland Coast libraries this week as part of Dementia Action Week.

Redland City Council is marking the national awareness week, from September 21 to 27, with events aimed at building understanding, connection and inclusion for people living with dementia, their families and carers.

Acting Mayor Julie Talty said more than 3200 Redland City residents were currently living with dementia, with that number expected to exceed 6400 by 2054.

“Dementia Action Week is an opportunity to encourage greater understanding of dementia and help build a more dementia-friendly and inclusive community,” Cr Talty said.

The documentary Mr Velvet Ears will screen at Victoria Point Library on Thursday, September 24, from 10am to noon; and Cleveland Library on Friday, September 25, from 1pm to 3pm.

The film follows a couple navigating the move into residential aged care while living with younger onset dementia, told through the perspective of their dementia assistance dog.

Each screening will also provide an opportunity for attendees to learn about local services, support networks and community activities offered through groups including Dementia Australia and the Redland Coast Dementia Community.

Cr Talty said the program supported Council’s Age-friendly Action Plan and Stronger Communities Strategy, as well as its ongoing partnerships with dementia support organisations.

Council also supports the Sing Sing Sing dementia choir, a Redland Performing Arts Centre Company in Residence which brings together people living with dementia and their carers for weekly school-term rehearsals.

The choir will present a showcase performance at RPAC on October 24.

Redland City Council was recognised by Dementia Australia in 2022 for its commitment to becoming a dementia-friendly city.

Cr Talty said Council had worked to make public spaces including libraries, galleries, customer service centres and RPAC more welcoming and accessible through practical measures such as signage, lighting, furniture and colour choices.
