For 55 years, the Lions Club of Capalaba has been making a difference in our local community – and we’re celebrating!

On Saturday, October 3 from 11am to 2pm, we’re opening the doors of the Underhill Centre for our special 55th Anniversary Open Day, and everyone is invited to come along and discover what Capalaba Lions is all about.

There will be plenty happening throughout the day, including a sausage sizzle, fairy floss, slushies, face painting, balloon animals, singing and a scavenger hunt, along with tea and coffee.

Since 1971, Capalaba Lions has been involved in projects that have helped shape our local community. The club played an important role in establishing Meals on Wheels in Capalaba and has donated a bus to a local nursing home.

Today, our members continue to support the community through food bags for people experiencing homelessness, Christmas toy and food hamper drives, teddy bears for children in need, hospital care packs for victims of domestic violence, and donations to organisations including Redland Community Centre and Night Ninjas.

Our famous Lions Christmas cakes and puddings are another much-loved part of our fundraising. While particularly popular around Christmas, these delicious treats are available throughout the year.

Our service also extends beyond Capalaba, with members collecting used eyeglasses that are sent to people in developing countries, as well as public speaking competitions which give young people opportunities to build confidence and valuable skills.

Capalaba Lions also manages the Underhill Centre, which has two halls available for hire by community groups and businesses. Income from the centre helps fund local community projects.

There are plenty of opportunities for members to learn and grow, through leadership training and development programs. We are proud that several Capalaba members currently hold District and national roles, including Sophie as Leadership Trainer, Christine as District Treasurer, Sam as Newsletter Editor, Sophia as 1st Vice District Governor, and Savva as National Service Projects Chair, supporting clubs across Australia.

Our membership ranges from 24 to 96, with members who have been involved for one year through to 55 years to Lions. We are particularly proud to have Graham, a charter member, still involved today.

We meet twice a month on the second and fourth Tuesdays, with the second meeting being a dinner and social evening and the fourth our business meeting.

As one of 65 clubs in the District, we are excited about the future and proud to be hosting the 2027 Lions District Convention at the Alexandra Hills Hotel.

Come along to our Open Day and discover how you can get involved. There’s a place for everyone in Lions!
