Lemonade kids make a stand against cancer

When Milla, Poppy and Lexie Frew opened their first pavement lemonade stand, their mum made them promise they wouldn’t waste the money they raised.

The Mount Cotton kids were true to their word – and decided to spend their profits on creating care packs for cancer patients at Mater Private Hospital Redland.

This week the girls – who lost their paternal grandfather to cancer before they were born – made their first delivery of 15 care packs to grateful patients at the hospital’s Cancer Care Centre.

“The girls were asking me for weeks to set up a lemonade stand and I finally said ‘OK, but you need to do something really special with the money you make’,” said mum Dee Frew.

“The girls agreed and really jumped on board. They decided to help cancer patients as they knew that cancer had taken their Pop from the family – it made it more real to them.”

Mrs Frew posted the girl’s venture on Facebook and kind-hearted passers-by and neighbours helped the girls make $200 on their first day of business.

Milla (8), Poppy (5) and Lexie (3) then purchased and packed mints, chocolates, socks and toiletries to be distributed to cancer patients at Mater Private Hospital Redland, as well as neighbouring Redland Hospital.

“They did a great job and are excited to do it again,” Mrs Frew said.

“I’m very proud of them.”

Mater Private Hospital Redland General Manager Chris Junge thanked the girls for supporting cancer patients in the Redlands.

“Our staff and patients were incredibly touched by Milla, Poppy and Lexie’s donations to the Mater Cancer Care Centre,” Mr Junge said.

“Their kindness is amazing and they make great lemonade too!

“Mater is so thankful for their generosity and that of everyone who helped make their lemonade stand such a success.”

Mater Private Hospital Redland is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

Each year the facility admits more than 13,000 patients and performs more than 7,500 procedures.
