Solo Travel Tips for Adventurous Bayside Seniors

WHATEVER your age, going solo can be a safe and sure way to travel.

Travelling solo has always been popular with back-packers, gap-year students and serious business types, but it seems to be more popular and acceptable these days across all age groups.

For many – even those in the senior category – are finding it the preferred way to go on a wide range of trips, even to distant lands, on cruises, as well as road and rail journeys closer to home.

A seasoned solo traveller herself, Bayside resident Di Hill had some good advice to give attendees at a recent Travellers’ Tales event at Wynnum 60 and Better earlier this month.

She shared her experiences of travelling alone.

From a driving adventure around Ireland in 2007 and getting away to many places in China when she was teaching there in 2008 and 2010.

She told of her time in South Korea – with a humorous incident or two to share – as well as trips to Bali, London and Dubai, not forgetting a series of solo driving escapades around Australia.

Why travel alone?

Ms Hill says it is not always easy to find a regular travelling companion who wants to do exactly what you want to do.

She does have plenty of tips to provide those contemplating going off on their own:

  • Be prepared – like all good boy and girl scouts.
  • Keep family regularly informed of where you are.
  • Always be on alert and keep your mobile phone charged.
  • Keep in touch with fellow solo travellers.
  • Be careful with your money – cash and cards.
  • Join group tours in foreign places.
  • Seek out like-minded travel companions on the way.

Of course, travelling alone can have its challenges.

That’s where operators like Titan Travel come in to provide safe and secure support for the solo traveller.

Titan recommends escorted group tours as a great way to holiday if you’re on your own.

They give you the reassurances you need that everything is in place.

You’ll know from the start that your journey is being expertly managed by people who really know a lot about the places you’re going to.

Your travel agent can provide you with all the information you need on the most popular and suitable destinations for solo travellers.
