THE Redlands community continues to remember James Newton, who tragically lost his life in a motorbike accident in August.
Following his passing, communities that James was heavily involved with united to pay tribute to the profound impact he had in his all-too-brief 25 years and 359 days.
Redlands Touch Football Association celebrated James as a passionate, dedicated and kind referee whose impact went beyond the field.
“Beyond his professionalism and commitment, James was deeply cherished off the field as a friend, mentor, and positive influence within both the referee and the wider touch football community,” a spokesperson said.
“His generosity, willingness to help others, and genuine love for the game have left an enduring legacy on all who had the privilege of knowing him.”
James was also well known as a long-time and passionate volunteer with Scripture Union, a not-for-profit organisation providing opportunities to explore the Christian faith, while providing young people an open and inclusive atmosphere no matter their background.
The GENTS Camp and Übertweak communities, part of the broader SU community, where James served at 27 camps from 2021 to 2025, paid tribute to the way he poured himself into others.
“James was great at relating to people where they’re at,” Übertweak Team Leader Samuel Eamessaid.
“He would recognise the best qualities in them to encourage and build them up.
“He had a strong faith and solid foundation in Christ, evident through the way he lived and how he led those around him.”
On September 12, hundreds of James’ friends, family and colleagues came together to celebrate his life.
Geoff Newton, James’ father, reflected on the day as one of his toughest, yet proudest memories of James.
“We celebrated his quirky dress style,” he said.
“We celebrated his absent- mindedness when it came to packing for camp.
“But mostly we celebrated his love of God and of the people he mentored, led and met.”
In the weeks since his passing, many stories have come to light about the quiet, selfless ways James gave of himself to others in his community.
James Newton was a true champion of the community.
