THE Redlands derby delivered plenty of drama at Cleveland’s Amcal Arena on Saturday evening, with Capalaba securing a vital 1-0 win over Redlands United to keep their survival hopes alive in the FQPL.

Redlands came into the Round 21 clash brimming with confidence after their thumping win over Caboolture a week earlier, while the Bulldogs were fighting to avoid relegation in 2026.

A healthy crowd was on hand to see the local rivals go head-to-head, and the opening stages suggested the home side would continue their strong form.

The Red Devils dominated the first half-hour, pinning Capalaba back in their own half and creating sustained pressure around the visitors’ goal.

But the contest was turned on its head in the 37th minute when James Keogh was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Capalaba grew into the game with the numerical advantage, forcing the Redlands defence to scramble, but the scores remained locked at 0-0 at the break.

Despite their disadvantage, Redlands returned for the second half with renewed intent.

However, it was Capalaba who struck first on 50 minutes, punishing a failed clearance to grab the decisive goal.

The home side thought they had levelled when Deegan Brook found the net with what appeared to be a well-worked move, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.

Redlands pressed hard in the final stages but were unable to find the breakthrough. Redlands coach Garrett McDuling praised his side’s effort despite the setback.

The derby also marked an emotional milestone, with McDuling and assistant coach Jayce Gilchrist departing at season’s end after announcing their resignations, while midfielder Eamon Ross celebrated his 50th senior appearance.
