IT was a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon at Amcal Arena in Cleveland as Redlands United played host to Southside Eagles in Round 11 of the FQPL1 competition.

The match started evenly, with neither side creating any clear-cut opportunities in the opening stages.

Redlands forward Isaac Garcia, who had hit a run of form in recent weeks as he regained fitness and consistency, was unfortunately forced off in the 12th minute.

A heavy collision with the opposing goalkeeper inside the penalty area left Garcia concussed and unable to continue.

The early substitution seemed to ignite the visitors, and Southside Eagles grew into the game.

If not for a superb save from Redlands goalkeeper Joel D’Cruz late in the first half, the Eagles might have taken a lead into the break.

A change in formation saw the Red Devils start the second half with more control.

Midfielders Josh Tufino and Ryo Asai began to dictate the tempo in the middle of the park, but despite the improved build-up play, the final pass continued to elude the home side.

Redlands remained patient and were rewarded in the 61st minute.

Max Ellenger leapt high in the six-yard box to meet an exquisite cross from Jason Park and powerfully headed home to give the Red Devils a 1-0 lead.

With fatigue beginning to take its toll over the final 30 minutes, the Red Devils were forced into a gritty defensive display.

Man of the match Joel D’Cruz stood tall once again, producing two more crucial saves and a key interception outside the box to preserve the clean sheet.

Redlands battled to the final whistle and, despite being out on their feet, secured a hard-earned 1-0 victory.

After the game, Redlands FQPL coach Jayce Gilchrist praised the team’s resilience and determination:

“After a really taxing mid-week Qld Cup fixture against Logan, we hosted a rejuvenated Southside Eagles here at Amcal Arena,” he said.

“Southside were fresh off a promising performance against a tough Rochedale side, who took more than 80 minutes to break down a resolute Eagles defence, and we knew that we’d have a difficult task ahead of us.

“The Redlands boys were quite fatigued after playing 120 minutes mid-week, coupled with the stop, start nature of 2025.

“We look forward to the end of the rain and a chance to get some much-needed consistency in training and match schedules.

“The three points come at a really important time and with other league results falling our way, we solidify ourselves firmly in the top four.”

Redlands now turn their attention to next Saturday’s 4pm clash at Amcal Arena against a hard-working Holland Park Hawks outfit.
