The discussion around men’s health has been emphasised this International Men’s Health Week by Redland-based groups and health organisations.
This year marked the 30th anniversary of International Men’s Health Week, from June 10 to 16, with a focus on men’s health checks and more awareness for mental, social and physical health.
Cleveland Uniting Church Men’s Shed president Ben Warner said it was very important for men to be aware of what was available around them, including services and organisations that are welcoming and supportive.
“Last year we celebrated our 10th year and we have between 40 and 50 members, of which about 25 come around each week,” Mr Warner said.
“The Men’s Shed, wherever you may be a member or a guest at, is a great way to meet with likeminded people and get advice or share your experiences.”
Mr Warner said the group met twice-weekly in Cleveland for morning tea, where visitors and members were encouraged to talk about anything they wanted to, or to share their experiences regarding health.
“As you do get older, things can be going wrong all the time,” he said.
“The Men’s Shed is a lovely group to be a part of because many men have been part of larger groups before where they can talk to each other.
“When you retire, you can lose all of that and lose the connections to talk to.
“Discussions of health are not a taboo, and when you share an interest with a group of people, it makes it easier to have these chats.”
The CUC Men’s Shed welcomes all on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7.30am to 11.30am.
Mr Warner said he, and the group, thanked the church for its support and for providing the space where the Men’s Shed members could come together.
