The 80th anniversary of the allied forces landing in Normandy, France, otherwise known as D-Day was commemorated by veterans and community members in Cleveland on June 6.

The Redlands RSL Branch members in addition to friends and family visited the memorial for a short service which included a wreath-laying ceremony as well as the lighting of a lantern.

The D-Day 80 Lamp Light of Peace was performed around the world in memory of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, recognising the flame’s light as representation of the “light of peace” that emerged from the darkness of war.

Despite weather concerns in the weeks leading up to the anniversary, Redlands RSL President Rob Wilson said he was happy to see the intimate turnout to commemorate the day.

The D-Day operation of June 6, 1944, was made combining the allied forces of the air, land and sea to deliver five naval assault division to the Normandy beaches.

The efforts would be recognised as the first allied operations that would ultimately liberate Western Europe, defear Nazi Germany and end the Second War War.
