A bus from Capalaba linked the class of 1963 at Camp Hill State High School (now Whites Hill College) to Redlands.

And on November 28, 35 members of that class will meet to celebrate 60 years of continuing friendship at The Farm at Wellington Point, currently owned by one of its alumni.

Class member Rick Phillips, 77, said his high school class had a good scattering of students from the Redlands who came by bus from Capalaba, given Cleveland High School did not offer Year 12.

Rick said he built one of the first houses in Alexandra Hills, paying $11,100 for the house at 9 Monarch Street on a block of land he paid $2300 for in 1967.

“I sold it seven years later for $37,000 and moved to Perth as state manager of a paint company,” he said.
Other links to the Redlands are held by classmates Bill Longstaff who went on to become the Professor of Mathematics at the University of Western Australia, Colin Ahern who worked as an industrial chemist for the DPI, Evan Andrews, Laraine Gonche and Rosslyn Bailey.

Bill describes the school as “civilised” compared to his attendance at Capalaba State School, which he described as being in “the bush”.

“At Capalaba, kids wore bare feet and some brought their horses to school,” he said.

People are traveling from Tasmania, Armidale NSW, The Entrance NSW, Pottsville Northern NSW, Gold Coast, Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast to attend the reunion.

“There will be many memories to share, memorabilia to view and lots of fun to be had,” Rick said.
