CLEVELAND has taken its place on the international football map after hosting the eighth edition of the 70 Plus Football World Cup.
Veteran players from Australia, Germany, Japan, the US, Canada and Wales descended on Redlands United Football Club for four days of competition, camaraderie and plenty of competitive spirit.
The tournament featured Over 70s, Over 75s and Over 80s divisions, proving a love of the world game – and the will to win – is alive and well long after most players have hung up their boots.
Games were played across Monday and Tuesday before competitors enjoyed a midweek break to recover, relax and take in the sights of the Redlands Coast.
The action resumed on Thursday before the final games were played on Friday, bringing the international event to a close.
For many players, it was a chance to reconnect with old teammates, meet footballers from across the world and show that age need not be a barrier to staying active.
Cleveland provided a fitting setting for the tournament with visiting players, partners and supporters enjoying the Bayside atmosphere between matches.
The event finished with a special World Cup presentation night at Sirromet Winery, where teams gathered to celebrate the week’s football and friendships.
Hosting the tournament was a major coup for the Redlands, giving the city a rare opportunity to welcome an international sporting event, and some of football’s most enduring competitors, to its own backyard.
