FOUR young Wynnum indoor cricketers are set to represent Australia at the World Junior Indoor Cricket Series in South Africa.
Ethan Duncan, Zac Taylor, Jayani Maharaj and Phoenix Zeller earned national selection after representing Queensland at the Australian Junior Nationals in Melbourne earlier this year.
Ethan and Zac were chosen in the Australian under-14 boys’ side, Jayani in the under-16 girls’ team and Phoenix in the under-18 boys’ squad.
Their selection continues a proud tradition at Wynnum Indoor Sports Centre, where generations of players have progressed to Queensland and Australian representation.
Based on Preston Rd, the centre has become a key development hub for indoor cricket in the Bayside, supported by experienced coaches with state and international playing backgrounds.
Indoor cricket offers a fast-paced alternative to the outdoor game, with year-round competition played away from the Queensland heat.
The national call-ups are a significant achievement for the four players and a boost for the local sporting community with the Wynnum centre also preparing to host State Nations this week and across the weekend.
The tournament will bring players and families from around Queensland to the Bayside.
Councillor Alex Givney congratulated the young athletes and wished them well as they take on the world’s best junior players in South Africa.
