DEVELOPERS behind Wynnum’s proposed $25 million waterfront dining and entertainment precinct have dramatically scaled back the project following community and Brisbane City Council feedback.
Carina Leagues Club has reduced the Bayside Pavilion from three storeys to two, cut its building footprint by
almost 60 per cent, and halved the number of proposed gaming machines.
The revised plans for the Fox St site include a cafe, takeaway fish and chip outlet, high-end steak and seafood restaurant, sports bar, and function and wedding venue capable of hosting 250 guests.
A new boardwalk would connect the development with the foreshore, while Greene Park and Wynnum Creek would be revitalised and the existing creek jetty rebuilt.
Carina Leagues Club chief executive Adam Wiencke said the revamped proposal reflected what residents wanted.
“This is the project Wynnum asked for, and we plan to deliver a game-changing community asset to the Bayside,” he said. “Not only does it cater for the Wynnum lifestyle with early morning coffee and breakfast, fish and chips for lunch and a high-end steak and seafood restaurant by the water, but it also provides jobs for locals and economic stimulation in the area.”
The club has also committed to providing a courtesy bus to improve access to the venue.
Carina Leagues Club says giving back to the community is central to its operations, estimating its social and economic contribution at more than $32 million.
That includes $2.2 million in cash donations this year.
The Lipke family will retain ownership of the long-held site and lease it to Carina Leagues Club, with a share of the venue’s profits to be donated to the community.
The original proposal attracted opposition from some Wynnum residents concerned about the development’s size, three-storey height, gaming facilities and potential impacts on traffic, parking and the character of the waterfront precinct.
The application has also faced scrutiny from Brisbane City Council and the State Government, with further information sought about coastal hazards, sea-level rise and engineering issues.
The revised plans will now be tested against those concerns as the assessment process continues.
The project team will unveil the revised plans and seek further public feedback at a community information session from 7.30am on Saturday, August 8, at Greene Park in Fox St.
