THE Queensland Government has confirmed Redland City Council’s Governance Adviser will finish his appointment on Tuesday, with no further extension planned despite Mayor Jos Mitchell’s ongoing leave of absence.
The Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers said governance adviser Chris Rose would conclude his tenure on June 30, ending an appointment that had already been extended by one month.
The department said the extension was granted to allow Mr Rose to support the council through the completion of its 2026-27 budget.
The confirmation comes after Mayor Jos Mitchell’s medical leave was recently extended until August, prompting questions about whether Mr Rose’s appointment would also continue.
The department also confirmed Mr Rose’s report will not be released publicly.
Instead, his recommendations will be provided directly to the department before being passed on to Redland City Council.
A report outlining practical recommendations to support council will be provided to the department on the conclusion of the appointment.
Council will then consider and implement the recommendations, as appropriate – with the department providing ongoing support as needed.
The response also sheds new light on the status of a proposed independent review into councillor conduct.
At its June 17 general meeting, Redland City Council resolved to ask the Director-General of the Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers to consider an independent review into the conduct of councillors towards Mayor Mitchell during an unspecified April 27 meeting.
However, more than a week later, the department says no request has yet been received.
The council resolution followed debate over allegations made by Mayor Mitchell regarding poor conduct during the April meeting, with councillors voting to seek consideration of an independent review by the State Government.
Until the formal request is received, the department says no decision can be made on whether a review will proceed, who would conduct it, or whether any findings would be made public.
