THE Redlands cycling community has come together to honour the life and legacy of long-time RCMC member Billy Wright, remembered as a passionate competitor, dedicated official and much-loved figure in the sport.
Wright, 69, who contributed to cycling across multiple roles – from racing on the velodrome and in criteriums to serving as a commissaire at countless events – has been described as someone who gave “so much of his life to cycling”.
His passing has been deeply felt across the local and broader cycling community.
Club members said Wright was “a larger-than-life personality who lived life to the full”, noting that while many shared in his cycling journey, it represented only “a glimpse of the remarkable person he was”.
A moving tribute was held on April 7 when dozens of cyclists formed a guard of honour at his memorial.
Around 50 to 60 riders stood with their bikes as Wright’s long-time friend and rival, Gerard O’Connell, walked his track bike through the line – a symbolic farewell to a man so closely connected to the sport. Days later, on April 10, the tributes continued with the Billy Wright Memorial Ride.
About 40 riders, many wearing the club’s red kit, gathered for the ride to Redlands Business Park – a venue closely associated with Wright through the many races he officiated over the years.
The ride provided an opportunity to reflect, share stories and celebrate Wright’s enduring impact on the cycling community.
While his loss is keenly felt, riders say his presence will live on in the stories, the rides and the spirit of the sport he loved.
