WYNNUM Wolves will turn tonight’s Queensland Cup fixture into a major charity fundraiser, rallying the football community to support those impacted by Cyclone Maila in the Solomon Islands.
The club’s clash with Rochedale Rovers on April 30 will now serve as the official fundraising event after an earlier charity match against Solomon Kings FC was unable to proceed.
Wynnum Wolves president Rabieh Krayem said the club’s focus had shifted fully to the Queensland Cup game, with the mission to raise vital funds unchanged.
“The aim remains unchanged – to raise much-needed funds for the communities impacted by Cyclone Maila,” Mr Krayem said.
“Due to unforeseen travel delays, our charity match against Solomon Kings had to be postponed, but our commitment remains the same.
“We’ll be raising funds for the Solomon Islands community at our next home game – April 30 vs Rochedale Rovers (Queensland Cup).
“Every bit of support matters.”
The match will still carry a strong Solomon Islands presence, with Solomon Kings players set to attend and take part in community activities on the night.
Mr Krayem said the visiting players would assist with training sessions and run children’s clinics before kick-off and during half-time, helping bring the spirit of the original charity match to life.
The initiative builds on a decades-long relationship between Wynnum Wolves and football in the Solomon Islands, with the club playing a role in supporting the development of the Solomon Kings as the nation’s first professional sporting team.
“In the Solomon Islands, football means everything. It’s more than sport – it’s hope, unity, and opportunity,” Mr Krayem said.
The club is urging the community to get behind the Queensland Cup clash, with donations also being encouraged as part of the fundraising push.
