EARLY community engagement has begun on a major upgrade of the Dunwich (Gumpi) Ferry Terminal, with concept designs expected to be released next month.
The Queensland Government this week launched preliminary consultation as part of planning for improvements to the North Stradbroke Island gateway, focusing on the arrival experience, transport access, safety and accessibility.
The project will be shaped by the SEQ City Deal, the Dunwich (Gumpi) Master Plan, and feedback from stakeholders, residents and visitors before progressing to construction.
Proposed features under consideration include a new pontoon, shelters, upgraded landscaping and arrival areas, along with potential commercial and retail opportunities.
The upgrade is jointly funded through the SEQ City Deal, with contributions of $10 million from the Australian Government, $30 million from the Queensland Government and $1 million from Redland City Council.
Member for Oodgeroo Amanda Stoker said the start of engagement marked a key milestone for the long-anticipated project.
“The Dunwich Ferry Terminal is more than a transport hub. It is the front door to Straddie for residents, visitors and local businesses alike, and this upgrade has been a long time coming,” Mrs Stoker said.
“This upgrade is at last an opportunity to improve safety, accessibility and amenity, while making sure the terminal better reflects the island’s character and strengthens the experience for everyone who uses it.”
She urged the community to take part in shaping the project.
“I encourage residents, commuters, businesses and visitors to take part in this early engagement and help shape the priorities for this project,” she said.
“Community feedback will help ensure the plans are practical, locally informed and respectful of the island’s natural environment and cultural heritage.”
Residents can provide feedback via a quick poll on the Department of Transport and Main Roads website, with submissions closing on Monday, April 20.
