A 15-year-old Capalaba footballer is set to test himself against the nation’s best after earning selection in Queensland’s top emerging talent squad.
Mitchell Smith will travel to Sydney from April 18 to 24 to compete in the Emerging Socceroos National Titles as part of the Under 16 Emerging Players Queensland team.
The attacking prospect, who plays as a striker or winger, forced his way into the elite program after impressing at an Easter carnival in 2025 before securing his place in the state squad.
“He’s a natural there. He’s very fast,” his father Greg Smith said of Mitchell’s preferred right-wing position.
Mitchell’s pace is well known beyond the football field, with the Mansfield State High School student also the school’s sprint champion.
Mr Smith said football had always been part of the family.
“He started playing in the Capalaba Bulldogs Squirts at age 5,” he said.
“His older brother Braydon and I played and so he followed suit.”
Braydon also progressed through the junior ranks, representing Brisbane South in the Under 15 State championships before stepping away from the game to focus on university studies.
Mitchell’s own pathway has continued to rise.
He joined Logan Lightning at age 13 and has since completed two seasons with the club, balancing a demanding training schedule of two nights a week, along with an additional elite squad session at Slacks Creek.
He also plays futsal with River City Futsal at Mans-field High and previously represented Queensland in the Under 11s, where he was part of a national championship-winning team.
Despite his individual success, Mr Smith said Mitchell’s team-first mindset set him apart.
“He loves being part of a team. He’s an unselfish player and enjoys scoring goals,” he said.
“His goal is to play in the National Premier League in the top senior level.
“This is a very realistic goal for him.”
The upcoming national titles in Sydney will provide Mitchell with a major opportunity to showcase his speed, attacking instincts and work rate on a national stage.
