Queensland’s Dan Purdie, the Minister for Police and Emergency Services, is understood to be seeking legal advice on whether the State can appeal the sentence imposed on Nathan Paul McKeown over the death of his dog, Arnie.
The move follows widespread public backlash after McKeown was spared jail despite pleading guilty to unlawfully killing his dog and obstructing police, instead receiving the maximum 240 hours of community service and an eight-month driving disqualification.
Any appeal would hinge on advice from prosecutors about whether the sentence was manifestly inadequate under Queensland law.
A decision on whether to proceed is expected once that advice is received.
