BMD Founder and Chairman Mick Power AM has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Queensland University of Technology (QUT), recognising his long-standing leadership in business and his contribution to communities across Australia.
Mr Power founded BMD in 1979, growing the company into Australia’s largest privately owned civil construction business, delivering major infrastructure projects nationally and internationally.
Today, BMD generates more than $2.4 billion in annual turnover and employs more than 2,400 people.
QUT recognised Mr Power for his values-led approach to leadership and his commitment to projects that connect and strengthen communities.
“Success is not only measured by what we build, but by the opportunities we create for others,” Mr Power said.
“This philosophy has guided me throughout my career and continues to shape BMD today.”
Alongside his national profile as a business leader, Mr Power has supported local community clubs and organisations for decades, particularly across Brisbane’s bayside.
For more than 40 years, Mr Power has championed long-term partnerships with charities, community programs and grassroots initiatives.
BMD now contributes more than $1.5 million annually to philanthropic and community causes, supporting initiatives across sport, education, healthcare, the arts and veterans’ services.
BMD employees also play an active role in volunteering, fundraising and disaster recovery efforts, including the company’s well-known “ute army,” which provides practical on-the-ground support during times of crisis.
Mr Power has been a strong advocate for women in sport and for creating opportunities for underrepresented groups.
BMD is a major partner in Australian sport, with sponsorships including the Brisbane Lions, Western Sydney Wanderers, Perth Scorchers, Northcliffe Surf Life Saving Club, North Queensland Cowboys, Melbourne Vixens and Queensland Rugby League.
The company has also supported Wynnum Manly Junior Rugby League for more than 40 years, golf through its Pro Am series and junior and senior pennants at Wynnum Golf Club for more than 25 years, and major funding of the Power Family Music Hall at Moreton Bay College.
Beyond community investment, BMD is also playing a key role in addressing regional growth pressures.
Following the Queensland Government’s announcement to unlock Southern Thornlands for housing development, BMD is involved in infrastructure delivery supporting the area’s future housing needs.
QUT said the honorary doctorate acknowledged not only Mr Power’s business success, but the broader impact of his leadership through philanthropy, partnerships and community engagement.
Mr Power’s personal values of family, drive, empowerment and collaboration continue to underpin BMD’s culture and its commitment to delivering projects that leave a lasting legacy beyond infrastructure.
Through decades of leadership and community involvement, Dr Mick Power AM has built an enduring impact that extends well beyond construction, helping to strengthen communities and empower people across Australia.
