SPORT in the Redlands and Bayside has always been about more than ladders and trophies.

At community level, rivalries are built over decades — forged in junior competitions, strengthened by shared facilities and fuelled by the simple desire to beat the club down the road.

While professional sport dominates headlines, it is these local clashes that continue to define weekends across the bayside.

Here are the seven rivalries that truly shape Redlands and Bayside sport.

The fiercest of them all belongs to football (or soccer).

When Redlands United Football Club meets Rochedale Rovers, form often counts for little.

This rivalry stretches back decades and has been shaped by promotion battles, finals encounters and a steady stream of players who have crossed between the two clubs.

Matches are typically fast, physical and emotionally charged, with strong crowds and vocal sidelines.

It is the fixture players remember long after they hang up their boots.

However, this season, the Red Devils’ clashes with Capalaba Bulldogs are also set to become the major rivalry, with both clubs competing in NPL1 and local bragging rights firmly on the line.

The rivalry between Wynnum Wolves FC and Rochedale Rovers is often said to date back to one of Brisbane football’s most infamous moments — when the lights went off during a grand final involving the two clubs.

The incident brought the game to a halt and immediately escalated tensions between the sides.

While responsibility for the blackout has long been debated, the episode became part of local football folklore and cemented the animosity between Wolves and Rovers.

Since then, the rivalry has been sustained by repeated finals clashes, promotion battles and regular encounters across senior and junior grades.

To this day, when Wynnum and Rochedale meet, the history is never far from the surface — and neither club needs reminding of the night the lights went out.

Cricket’s most defining local contest is between Redlands Tigers Cricket Club and Wynnum-Manly District Cricket Club.

Played annually for the Mark Gaskell Shield, this bayside rivalry carries weight well beyond competition points.

Both clubs draw from strong junior pathways and share a long competitive history.

A strong performance in this fixture can define a season — and a reputation.

At true community level, few rivalries are as personal as Cleveland District Cricket Club versus Victoria Point Cricket Club.

This is suburb versus suburb in its purest form.

Short travel, shared schools and overlapping families ensure bragging rights extend far beyond the boundary rope.

Many players have faced each other since juniors, giving senior matches a depth of history that keeps the contest fiercely competitive.

One of the Redlands’ strongest modern rivalries plays out not on grass, but on touch fields across southeast Queensland.

The long-running rivalry between Redlands Touch Association and Gold Coast Touch Association has been forged through state cups, representative carnivals and finals encounters.

Redlands teams pride themselves on grit and cohesion, while Gold Coast sides bring depth and polish.

The clashes are fast, skillful and fiercely contested, with representative jerseys and reputations on the line.

Rugby league’s most enduring rivalry for the Redlands and Bayside plays out primarily at junior level.

Redlands Rugby League Club against Wynnum Manly Seagulls is a clash shaped by repeated encounters across age groups and representative pathways.

These games are physical, passionate and closely watched by families who follow the rivalry year after year as players progress through the grades.

Rounding out the top six is one of the Redlands’ most consistent cricket rivalries:

Wellington Point Cricket Club versus Mooroondu Cricket Club.

Built on proximity and shared facilities, this rivalry thrives on local pride.

Junior matches often set the tone, with competitiveness carrying through to senior cricket and ensuring this fixture always attracts interest.

What unites these rivalries is not scale, but connection.

They are generational, community-driven and fiercely defended.

In the Redlands and Bayside, sport is personal — and these seven rivalries prove exactly why.
